Vol. 98 No. 1

Private Notice Question. - Tánaiste's Visit to London.

asked the Minister for External Affairs whether, in view of the public interest in the recent visit of the Tánaiste to the British Government, he will state whether he is now in a position to make a statement to the Dáil on its object and result.

The primary purpose of the Tánaiste's recent visit to London, which was of an informal character, was to explore the possibility of initiating discussions in regard to air transport. He saw the Minister of Civil Aviation, and, following his conversation with him, I hope that arrangements will be made at a later stage for the initiation of discussions on this subject between representatives of the two Governments.

The Tánaiste took advantage of the opportunity afforded by his visit to see the following British Ministers also: the Secretary of State for the Dominions, the President of the Board of Trade, the Minister of Fuel and Power, and the Minister of Food, and he had informal conversations with them on matters of common interest regarding trade and supplies. Nothing emerged from these conversations which would afford a basis for any statement at the present stage.

Will the Minister say whether any arrangements were made with any of these Ministers for formal conversations on any matter?

In the matter of civil aviation, I expressed the hope that at a later stage discussions might be initiated on this subject between representatives of the two Governments.

The Taoiseach mentioned that informal conversations were carried on with certain other Ministers.

Would he say whether any arrangement was made to carry on formal conversations with these Ministers?

Not in the case of the other Ministers.

Would the Taoiseach say was there any mention of Partition in the conversations?
