Vol. 98 No. 1

Written Answers. - Defence Forces.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware of the hardships caused to many members of the Defence Forces who are demobilised or retiring to civil life by the withholding of their allowances or gratuities for two or three months after leaving the Army; and, if so, if he will consider the desirability of making such payments on the date on which their discharge takes effect.

Each member of the Defence Forces proceeding on pre-demobilisation leave receives in advance either two or three weeks' pay and allowances, whichever is appropriate to his particular case. At the same time, arrangements are made to have the amount of his gratuity paid into a Post Office Savings Bank account in his name, and this is usually done before the actual date of the soldier's discharge.
