Vol. 98 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Working Conditions at Edenderry Hospital.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that the wardsmaid employed at the District Hospital, Edenderry, County Offaly, is responsible for cooking and washing for all the patients, and is compelled to sleep in the same ward with patients, and that she is receiving a weekly wage of only 12/6; and, if so, if he will request the county manager to investigate the conditions of the workers employed at this hospital, with a view to the provision of sufficient staff and the payment of fair rates of wages.

My information is that there is one resident wardsmaid in the hospital who has the assistance of two non-resident part-time attendants. I understand that on account of lack of accommodation in the building the resident wardsmaid sleeps in a ward. From the particulars of staff furnished to my Department the wardsmaid is in receipt of a wage of 14/- weekly with rations. I am having further inquiries made in regard to the case.
