Vol. 98 No. 15

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Old Age Pensions.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the General Council of County Councils has urged a higher rate of old age pension with a modification in the means test applicable to old age pension applications, and if he proposes to give effect to the request in the near future.

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative and the answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, is he aware that proposals are before the British Parliament at present for providing minimum old age pensions for men at 24/- per week and for women at 16/- per week? In view of that, is he prepared to take any action to improve the position of old age pensioners here?

I am sure the Minister is aware of that already.
