Vol. 99 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Exports of Hides and Skins.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state whether any regulations governing the export of hides and skins have been made by him; if so, what is the nature of such regulations; further, if he will state if any regulations governing the disposal, distribution and sale of hides and skins within Éire have been made by him; and, if so, what is the nature of such regulations.

The export of cattle hides and calf skins is regulated by the Emergency Powers (Control of Export) Order, 1940. The effect of this Order is to prohibit the export of these commodities, save under licence. This control is necessary because of the shortage of imported hides.

The export of sheep skins from which the wool has not been removed is prohibited by the Sheepskin (Control of Export) Order, 1945, made under the Sheepskin (Control of Export) Act, 1934. This control is designed to protect the fellmongering industry here.

The Emergency Powers (Hides) Order, 1944, requires each hide merchant to be registered, but registration is granted freely and the Order imposes no restriction on the disposal, distribution and sale of hides within the country.
