Vol. 99 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf Plan.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state what bogs in Laoighis are to be developed under the ten-year turf plan; if the bogs at Garrymore and Garryhinch near Mountmellick in Leix and Offaly are considered suitable for development; and if he will have the bogs in Mountmellick area specially considered for development.

The ten-year programme to be undertaken by the Turf Development Board Ltd. does not include any bog in the County of Laoighis. Two of the bogs selected for development are, however, situated close to the Laoighis border.

A preliminary inspection of the Garrymore and Garryhinch bogs has been carried out by the Turf Development Board but a final decision as to their suitability for mechanical production cannot be made until detailed surveys have been completed.

As I have already stated in reply to a similar question, the Turf Development Board is, at present, engaged in a comprehensive survey of the major bog areas throughout the country.

In view of the good quality of the bogs in Mountmellick area, would the Minister take a special interest in them and do as much as possible to have a scheme put into operation in that area?

As I have stated, the suitability of the bogs for mechanical development will be decided upon when the detailed survey now being undertaken shall have been completed.
