Vol. 99 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Recognition of Republic.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state what steps he has taken to secure the recognition of Éire as a republic by the Governments of the United States of America and of other nations.

There is no need for any step such as that which would seem to be indicated in the Deputy's question. The character of our Constitution is well understood by Governments abroad without the need for any such step.

Does the Taoiseach see any useful purpose in the proclamation of a republic which is recognised neither internally nor externally?

That is not true.
