Vol. 99 No. 17

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Timber Suitable for Oars.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the fishermen of this country are unable to procure native timber suitable for the making of oars especially seine-boat oars; and if he will arrange that a quantity of suitable timber be imported for the manufacture of oars.

I am not aware that there is a shortage of native timber suitable for the manufacture of oars. I understand that ash is generally regarded as the best timber for oars and it should be possible to obtain supplies of this timber in the country. I am prepared to grant an import licence to any individual or firm who is in a position to secure a supply of ash from abroad.
