Vol. 100 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Turf-Cutting in Kerry.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state the reasons why turf is not being cut this year by the county council in North Kerry, where a large number of experienced men are unemployed, and a considerable sum of money was spent during the emergency in making roads and bridges for the purpose of transporting turf from bogs in the area, some of which are only six or ten miles from railway stations.

I have been informed that, as in 1945, it has been decided not to undertake turf production in the northern part of Kerry during 1946 primarily because of the urgent necessity for the execution of road works in the area. An extensive programme of road works has been planned and it is anticipated that these works will require the employment of all available labour.
