Vol. 100 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Coupons for Busmen's Uniforms.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of clothing coupons required to be surrendered for their uniform by a bus driver and a bus conductor in the employment of Córas Iompair Éireann in Dublin City.

In the case of the bus driver 45 coupons are required to be surrendered for a three-piece suit and 37 coupons for an overcoat. In the case of the bus conductor 11 coupons are required to be surrendered for a three-piece suit and nine coupons for an overcoat.

The reduced number of coupons has been fixed for the conductor because it is regarded as essential that the conductor, whose duties bring him into immediate contact with the public, should be readily identifiable.

As uniform suits are issued at intervals of one and a half years and overcoats at intervals of three years, the acquisition of these garments involves an annual surrender of 42 coupons by bus drivers and 11 coupons by bus conductors.

Is it not a fact that the union concerned are in negotiation with the Minister's Department with the view of settling this matter? All the members are members of the Transport Union.

This matter has been discussed with the Union.

It has been discussed; it is under consideration?
