Vol. 101 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Mayo Lands.

asked the Minister for Lands if it is the intention of his Department to acquire for distribution among the local congested tenants the lands formerly held by the late James Tristan on the More O'Ferrall estate at Logboy, Ballyhaunis.

The question appears to relate to the lands of Cottage, County Mayo, owned by the representatives of James Tristan, deceased. The Land Commission have no proceedings for acquisition in this case, but a note has been taken of the matter.

asked the Minister for Lands whether he is aware that the rundale system is still in existence at Kilnock, Tulrahan, County Mayo, on the ffrench Blake estate (C.D.B. 127); that all the tenants, with the exception of two, have migrated to England in search of a livelihood; and if he will state whether his Department will now acquire the total of 28 acres under the rundale system in this district, and have it divided between the two remaining tenants with reasonable compensation to the absentee tenants.

The Land Commission are aware of the existence of rundale holdings in the townland of Kilnock but it is solely the fault of the tenants of that townland that the position has not been improved. Several of them persistently declined to co-operate with the Land Commission in regard to the rearrangement of their holdings. The possibility of acquiring some land in the district is being examined and if any suitable land becomes available the question of the alleviation of rundale will be dealt with as far as practicable. The Land Commission are not aware that all but two of the tenants have left the district permanently and migrated to this England but the Deputy's reference to this aspect of the matter has been noted.

asked the Minister for Lands if any steps have been taken by his Department to acquire the lands of the late Edward Irwin, Levilick, Kilmovee, County Mayo (Collection No. 94/1241, Folio No. 4566, County Mayo, Estate of Congested Districts Board, formerly Dillon).

The Land Commission have not taken any steps towards the acquisition of the lands of the late Edward Irwin, at Levilick, County Mayo.

Is the Minister aware that of late an agitation has taken place in relation to the division of this holding, that is, the driving of cattle and the breaking down of fences? Is he also aware that the executor of the late Mr. E. Irwin has offered this holding to the Land Commission and told the parish priest to inform his parishioners of that locality? In view of that, will the Minister take the necessary steps to have the land allocated amongst the smallholders?

I have no such information.

The information I am giving you now is correct.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission intends striping the lands of the late William J. Shaw, Tallagh; and if he is aware that there is acute congestion in this area.

The question of the rearrangement and striping of holdings on the estate of Shaw Minors, Record No. S.4370, has been noted for consideration in conjunction with four other estates in Tallagh townland, but the Land Commission are not yet in a position to state when the matter can be dealt with.
