Vol. 101 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Educational Course for Ex-Soldiers.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will say whether it is proposed to make any arrangements to enable men, whose educational course has been interrupted by joining the Army during the emergency, to complete their courses now.

It is not considered necessary to make special arrangements to enable men whose educational courses had been interrupted by Army service during the emergency to complete their courses now. Special facilities were provided during the emergency to enable men to secure their discharge from the forces or to obtain indefinite leave from Army service for the purpose of resuming their studies.

Will the Minister say if any special financial arrangements were made to help those men who were relieved from Army service after having given a number of years service in the Army?

Yes. The Deputy will remember that there were rather generous gratuities given to privates, N.C.O.'s and officers when they were leaving the Army. The purpose of these gratuities was for the purpose of assisting them in civilian life and I presume that those persons in whom the Deputy is interested could have applied these gratuities to the purposes he had in mind.

Are we to understand that outside of the gratuities given generally, no special financial arrangements are being made to enable men who join the Army to complete either a professional or university course?

No, there are no special funds.
