Vol. 101 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Production of Batch Bread in Prisons.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state, in respect of each prison, the present over-all cost of producing batch bread in terms of the four pound loaf; and if he will indicate the cost of each item included in this over-all cost.

Bread is baked in one prison only, viz., Mountjoy. The production of a four-pound loaf is estimated to cost, for flour and other materials about 8¼d, and for fuel about 1d, making a total of about 9¼d. The labour is mainly prison labour. Any estimate of the cost in respect of overhead charges would be difficult to make and would be of no practical value.
