Vol. 102 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authorities' Employees.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health whether it is his intention to declare, under Section 23 of the Local Government Act, 1941, an age limit in respect of certain offices under local authorities; whether, in the event of the age limit being fixed at 65 in respect of the existing holders of such offices, he will indicate to the local authorities that in the case of such officers having entered pensionable service at a more advanced age than the normal age of entry, he will authorise the addition, for the purpose of calculating pensionable service, of at least five years to the actual period of service.

A circular has been issued to local authorities informing them that it is intended to fix during the present year the age limit of 65 for certain local officers, and that this will come into operation on 31st March, 1947. Local authorities have been asked to notify officers affected.

The special circumstances which are held to justify an addition of years for the purpose of reckoning superannuation allowance were communicated to local authorities by circular letter of 4th April, 1925. It is not proposed to issue a further circular letter on the subject.
