Vol. 102 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Swords Water Supply.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware of the dissatisfaction which exists in Swords at the moment concerning the unsatisfactory water supply; and further, that the present water supply is unfit for drinking or domestic purpose; and if he will take steps to see that this serious state of affairs is remedied immediately.

I have no information which would suggest that the water supply to the Swords and Malahide area is unfit for drinking or other domestic purposes. Recently the local authority, following a complaint received regarding the taste of the water supply to Malahide, which is part of the same system which supplies Swords, had samples of the water analysed both chemically and bacteriologically. These analyses showed that whilst the supply was quite safe for drinking or other domestic purposes, the taste had been affected owing to the use of a temporary chlorinating plant during a period when the permanent plant was under repairs. The latter plant has now been reinstalled and there should be no further cause of complaint regarding the taste of the water.
