Vol. 102 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Benefit Scheme.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the scheme relating to the payment to our nationals of unemployment benefit on their return home from employment in Great Britain, which he referred to on 8th May, 1946, has been submitted to him; and whether he is now in a position to make a statement in regard to the matter.

Discussions are taking place in London between officials of my Department and the British authorities on proposals made by the British authorities regarding payment of unemployment benefit from the Unemployment Fund of Great Britain to Irish citizens who are unemployed on their return here after service in the British forces. Arrangements regarding civilian workers who are unemployed on their return here from employment in Great Britain will also be discussed, but the matter appears to be regarded by the British authorities as one for consideration on the enactment of the National Insurance Bill at present under consideration by the British Parliament. Legislation will probably be necessary to implement any agreement that is made.
