Vol. 102 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Export Price of Turkeys.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if the export price for turkeys for the coming season has been fixed and if so, if he will state the price; further, if he will state what was the levy per lb. on turkeys in 1945 and what was the total amount collected by way of levy in that year.

Assuming that there is no change in existing arrangements, the price to exporters for turkeys during the coming season will be the same as last year, viz., 2/4 per lb. dead weight. The rate of deduction on turkeys in 1945 was 3d. per lb. and the total amount collected, £118,000, which was fully expended in payment of a higher price for eggs.

Will the levy be continued for the coming season?

If the circumstances remain as they are it will.

Will the Minister say if this is a matter that will come before the conference that is being held in London between Irish and British representatives?

The result of that conference will have a bearing on it.

Does the Minister not consider that the present price for turkeys is uneconomic and will he endeavour to arrange a more satisfactory price for the coming season?

If they did not fine the turkey growers £118,000 a year the price would not be so bad.

Will the Minister say why he did not go to London?
