Vol. 103 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Percentages in Flour.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the average percentage of Irish and imported wheat used in the manufacture of flour in (a) 1944, (b) 1945, and at present.

The average percentages of native and imported wheat used in the manufacture of flour were as follows:—

Cereal Year.

1944/45

58.5% native wheat; 40.8% imported wheat.

1945/46

67%,,,,33%,,,,

Present

Approximately 75% native wheat and 25% imported wheat.

Observe the improvement in the quality of the bread. Grow more wheat!

I decline to carry on in face of these interruptions.

That is the third interruption by the Deputy.

Will the Minister say if it is intended to increase the admixture of native wheat in the near future?

Our trouble at the moment is that we have an insufficient supply of imported wheat.

Is the supply position such at the moment that it is likely that the admixture of native wheat will be increased? The proportion is now 75 per cent. native and 25 per cent. imported.

I am afraid I am not in a position to express an opinion on that matter.
