Vol. 103 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Islanders' Fuel Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that many residents of Cape Clear Island, Sherkin Island, Hare Island, Bere Island, and other islands off the West Cork coast are unable, owing to the wetness of the season, to procure suitable or sufficient fuel of any description for the winter months; and if so, if he will take the necessary steps to supply the residents of these islands with a suitable fuel for domestic purposes for the winter months, and thus prevent great hardship and suffering.

I understand it is the normal practice of the residents of the islands in question to make their own arrangements to procure their supplies of turf from producers on the mainland. No complaints have been received in my Department as to any difficulties in this respect in the current season, but I am having inquiries made in the matter.
