Vol. 103 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Disposal of Beet Crop.

asked the Minister for Agriculture whether, in view of the continuation of the sugar beet factories strike, he will take immediate steps to arrange an alternative way for the farmers to dispose of the beet crop on hands, and to issue instructions to them as to the best means of avoiding serious loss of the sugar content of the beet.

In my view, these matters should be discussed with Comhlucht Siúicre Éireann with whom the beet growers have contracted to grow the crop.

I want to hear the answer to Question No. 16. I did not hear a word the Minister said.

Perhaps the Minister would repeat the answer to Question No. 16?

(Reply to Question No. 16 repeated.)

Where is the Minister for Agriculture? Has the Minister read the contract which the farmer is asked to sign? He undertakes to grow a certain acreage of beet for the factory. Now that he has grown it, it is left on his hands. What is his alternative?

Surely the Minister for Agriculture should have some responsibility.

There should be some order in the House.
