Vol. 104 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee Turf Supplies.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that one of the large turf depôts in Tralee has been closed down for the past month because of the inability of the owner to secure supplies; that families depending on this depôt for fuel are left without turf for two or three days at a time because the owners of the other depôts in the town are holding their stocks to meet the requirements of their regular customers; that the available stocks of turf in Tralee are so small that they cannot last more than a couple of weeks; and whether he will, therefore, have the whole position immediately investigated with a view to preventing further hardships on the people of the town and district.

I am aware that all fuel merchants in Tralee are finding difficulty in obtaining adequate and regular supplies of turf, and that one retailer at least has closed down from time to time. I understand, however, that the other merchants have been prepared to supply additional customers to the best of their ability. The position in Tralee and elsewhere is under constant review, but it is my view that the problem of obtaining such turf as is available on the bogs in the area can best be solved by the initiative of the individual traders concerned.
