Vol. 104 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Price of Potatoes.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that the maximum prices fixed for potatoes are entirely inadequate for growers who have experienced a very difficult and costly season for the production of this crop; and if he will take steps to have these prices increased.

In reply to the first part of the Deputy's question, I am advised that the maximum wholesale prices fixed for potatoes under the Potatoes (Maximum Prices) Order, 1947, permit of the payment of reasonable prices to growers; the answer to the second part of the question is in the negative.

Arising out of the Minister's reply, did he cause any investigations to be made into the costs of production before fixing these maximum prices?

I think the price fixed for potatoes is a good price, from the point of view of the growers. Any complaint in that direction should, I think, come from the consumers.
