asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he will state if the building of the council cottages in County Dublin will commence at an early date, as there is a grave shortage of houses; also if he will state how many cottages will be sanctioned for building, or have already been sanctioned in the first scheme; and, further, the number of cottages allocated to each area, and the name of that area.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Housing in County Dublin.
A compulsory purchase Order authorising the acquisition of sites for 998 labourers' cottages in County Dublin was confirmed by me on the 18th October, 1946, and plans for the erection of 11 groups of cottages comprising 498 dwellings are under examination in my Department. Plans in respect of the remaining cottages are in an advanced stage of preparation.
Proceedings questioning the validity of the Order have been instituted in the High Court, and the council is precluded from taking possession of the lands to be acquired pending the decision of the court. In the circumstances, it is not possible at this stage to indicate the probable date for the commencement of building.
The sites referred to are situated convenient to towns and villages in the county. A list of the areas, and the number of cottages proposed for each area, will, with the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, be circulated with the Official Report.
In addition to this scheme, a scheme of 12 cottages at Santry has been approved and will commence within the next few months.
