Vol. 104 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Citizens Deported (Channel Islands).

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he has received any information from the responsible authorities concerning the Irish citizens who were deported from the Channel Islands some time ago; if he is now in a position to make a complete statement on this matter; or if he has anything to add to his statement in Dáil Éireann on the 29th May, 1946.

I told the Deputy on the 29th May that the number of Irish citizens involved was five, that only one of the five had communicated with the Department, but that the Department was taking steps to communicate with the other four.

The man who communicated with the Department has since been given permission to return to Jersey if he wishes to do so. Of the other four men, one did not reply to the communication addressed to him by the Department and the remaining three were seasonal workers who normally would not spend more than a few weeks or months each year in the Islands. None of these expressed any desire to return to Jersey.
