Vol. 104 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Importation and Sale of Maize.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state: (a) the quantity of maize imported during the year 1946; and (b) the quantity sold for consumption.

The quantity of maize imported during the year 1946 was approximately 112,000 tons, of which 77,000 tons were distributed.

Is the quantity still on hands in good condition or bad condition?

It is not fit for human consumption, as was pointed out already to-day, but it is all right for animal feeding.

What made it unfit for human consumption?

It suffers from a disease called weevils.

It will be sold for animal consumption?

If any poor shopkeeper in the country had them he would be sentenced to six months in gaol, but the Minister has them and he gets nothing.
