Vol. 104 No. 1

Written Answers. - Howth Relief Schemes.

asked the Minister for Local Government and Public Health if he is aware that there was much disappointment amongst the unemployed in Howth and Sutton during the Christmas period, as no money was allocated for relief works; if he will favourably consider procuring a recommendation from the local authority on special relief schemes that could be started in Howth during the coming year; if he is aware that Howth is much in need of development regarding shelters, public conveniences and proper cliff walks; and if he will also state how many houses the Dublin Corporation intend to build in Howth during the coming year.

It is a matter for the Dublin Corporation to submit proposals for works to be carried out with the aid of grants from the Employment and Emergency Schemes Vote. The schemes submitted in connection with the allocation of the current year's Vote did not include any works in Howth and Sutton area. If the corporation should submit proposals for carrying out suitable schemes of the type mentioned by the Deputy, the question of obtaining a special allocation for the district would be considered in conjunction with the special employment schemes office, having regard to the number of recipients of unemployment assistance registered for work in the area.

As regards housing provision, the corporation are at present carrying out a housing survey of Howth and until this is completed it will not be possible to say what number of workers' houses are required.
