Vol. 104 No. 1

Written Answers. - Compulsory Tillage Prosecutions.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, for each county, in respect of the period 1941 to 1946 inclusive: (a) the number of prosecutions brought under the Compulsory Tillage Orders; (b) the number of persons convicted; (c) the total amount of the fines imposed; (d) the total number of cases in which entry was made on holdings by officers of the Department; (e) the total area affected by such entry, and (f) the average percentage of arable land acquired for cultivation as a result of such entry.

The table below gives the information requested by the Deputy under (a), (b), (c), (d) and (e) of his question. As regards part (f), it is not possible to relate the area cultivated in each county as a result of entry to the total arable land of the county because the Compulsory Tillage Orders apply only to farms of five or more statute acres of arable land and there has not necessarily been an inspection of every farm to which the Orders apply.

COMPULSORY TILLAGE, 1941—1946.

STATEMENT showing for each County (1) number of prosecutions and penalties imposed for non-compliance with Tillage Orders, and (2) number of holdings entered and areas cultivated by Department.
