Vol. 104 No. 1

Written Answers. - Service Medals and Special Allowances.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will state: (i) the number of applications received in his Department for medals in respect of service with the forces up to July, 1921; (ii) the number refused the award of medal; (iii) the number duly awarded service medals; (iv) the number of applications for special allowances under Section 14 of the Army Pensions Act, 1946; (v) the number of applications for such allowances granted; and (vi) the number refused.

Following is the reply:—

(i) The number of applications received for service medals without bar in respect of service with the forces up to July, 1921, is 24,311.

(ii) The award of a medal has been refused in 1,378 cases and 10,860 cases are still under investigation.

(iii) Medals have been awarded in 12,073 cases but the grant of a medal in each of these cases is being reinvestigated in order to secure that the medal has been duly awarded for the purposes of Section 14 of the Army Pensions Act, 1946.

(iv) The number of applications for special allowances under Section 14 of the Army Pensions Act, 1946, is 800.

(v) 110 applications have been granted.

(vi) Awards have been refused in 222 cases.

The figures set out at (i), (ii) and (iii) above do not include 13,448 medals with bar, 13,260 of which were issued without application to holders of certificates under the Military Service Pensions Acts, 1924-1934, a further 188 being issued on application to persons who did not apply for certificates under the Acts but who would have been awarded certificates had they made application.
