Vol. 104 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Bread Allowances.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that tillage farmers and their workers in County Dublin, who travel to the city markets with vegetables, and who are on the road from early morning until late at night, were generally supplied with sandwiches in the various licensed houses along their routes; and if, in view of this, he is prepared to grant an allowance of bread to publicans to enable them to provide the people mentioned with at least a reduced supply of sandwiches.

I am aware that certain licensed premises supplied sandwiches to customers. Owing to the present difficult supply position, it has been necessary to restrict supplies of bread to catering establishments (including licensed premises which have been in receipt of allowances of tea, sugar or butter during the emergency period.

I am not prepared, in view of the circumstances, to grant an allowance of bread to publicans generally.
