Vol. 104 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wheat Growing in North Meath.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he is aware that the soil in a portion of North Meath, along the Cavan border, has been proved unsatisfactory for the growing of wheat; and if, owing to the serious losses which occur in this area from the enforcement of the compulsory wheat growing Orders, he will have steps taken to allow other cereal food crops to be grown there instead.

I am aware that in County Meath and in other counties where the maximum wheat quota applies there are lands which are not very suitable for the growing of wheat. It would not, however, be practicable to segregate all such lands for special treatment. I can do no more than assure the Deputy and those interested that where I am satisfied that an occupier has made every reasonable effort to meet the wheat quota and has in other respects fully complied with the Tillage Order no penal action will be taken against him.

Members of Fianna Fáil clubs who do not grow wheat will not be prosecuted, but the others will.

Why should I grow wheat to feed you?
