Vol. 104 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Employment Statistics.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he will state the estimated number of persons in full-time employment weekly, in occupations insurable under the Unemployment Insurance Acts, for the years 1938-1946, inclusive, as reckoned from the net contribution income for each year.

The estimated average number of persons (to nearest 100) employed weekly as derived from the net contribution income of the unemployment insurance fund in each of the years 1938 to 1946, inclusive, is as follows:—

Year

Estimated Average Numbers Employed Weekly.

1938

256,600

1939

255,700

1940

249,900

1941

247,400

1942

244,000

1943

243,400

1944

249,200

1945

260,800

1946

285,200

The figure for 1946 is provisional. The increase anticipated in the average number employed in that year as compared with the average number in 1945 is the largest annual increase since 1930. It exceeds the weekly average for the best pre-war year by 28,600.

The expression "net contribution income" has the same meaning as in the memoranda "The Trend of Employment and Unemployment."
