Vol. 104 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Sligo Flooding.

asked the Minister for Finance if he will take steps to see that the Kilcummin River, a tributary of the River Moy, is cleared of the obstacles which obstruct its course owing to the land-slide in the Cloonacool area, County Sligo, in November last, so as to prevent the flooding of the adjoining lands and possible serious damage to crops and meadows.

The drainage of the Kilcummin River will be considered when the Moy catchment, of which it forms a part, is being dealt with under the Arterial Drainage Act, 1945. I can make no forecast at this stage as to when the Moy catchment area may be reached in the arterial drainage programme.

If, however, the work required is of a relatively minor nature, and would not cause flooding of lands further downstream, it might be possible to have it carried out under the rural improvements scheme administered by the Special Employment Schemes Office. I have had no previous representations in the matter, but if an application is submitted under that scheme, I will have it investigated.
