Vol. 104 No. 18

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Encouragement of Egg Production.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state what steps he has taken to encourage and help egg production this year so that, in the interests of increased production here, the maximum benefit may be derived from the egg agreement with Great Britain.

Owing to the adverse weather conditions, issue of propaganda and other arrangements designed to encourage egg production this year have had to be delayed.

An announcement has now been made of the scheme for paying special high prices for cockerels. It has also been decided to increase the export price of eggs this year by 3d. per dozen above last year. A propaganda campaign is being initiated to encourage poultry producers to increase laying stocks where possible, to give particular care to the maintenance of existing flocks and to the prevention of waste of either feeding stuffs or eggs on the farms and to market more eggs this year in order to enable the agreement with the British Ministry of Food to be implemented.

Does the Minister intend to extend the period of the subsidy for day-old chicks? Does he expect to hit the target?

That is a separate question.

Surely not.

Will the Minister indicate what steps he has taken to help egg production?

There are so many steps one could take.

Does the Minister expect to fulfil the conditions attaching to the London agreement?

It would appear that, by reason of the conditions which have prevented so many other activities, it is very doubtful if we will be able to fulfil these conditions.

I am sure the Minister appreciates the importance of ensuring a high production in chicks. Does the Minister intend to extend the subsidy period?

All the factors which will enable us to fulfil these conditions will be carefully considered and attended to.

Am I correct in saying that the subsidy period is being extended by a month?

That is possible.
