Vol. 105 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cost-of-Living Index Figure.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if his attention has been called to the revised method of computing the cost-of-living index figure in Great Britain; and if he proposes to adopt this revised method for this country, in view of the claims made for the introduction of a more modern procedure.

I am aware of the recommendations made by the advisory committee which has recently reported on the cost-of-living index number for Great Britain, but it is not yet clear what basis is to be adopted for the computation of the new permanent index. The question of the revision of the basis of the cost-of-living index number for this country is under consideration, but, until such time as more normal conditions of supply of consumer goods prevail, I am of opinion that the existing basis of computation should not be disturbed.
