Vol. 105 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Teaching of Rural Science.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state the number of primary schools in which rural science is now being taught as an ordinary school subject; and further, whether he will state, in respect of each county, the number of schools in which rural science is so taught.

The answer is in the form of a tabular statement which, with your permission, I will have circulated with the Official Report.

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Education if he will state: (a) the proportion of the primary schools in which rural science is taught as a school subject; and (b) the proportion of the pupils in each class to whom it is taught.

Rural science is taught in 87 primary schools out of a total of 4,958 or 1.8 per cent. In the schools where it is taught, the proportion of the pupils in each standard, to whom it is taught, is as follows:—

3rd Standard

92 per cent.

4th Standard

95 per cent.

5th Standard

96 per cent.

6th Standard

93 per cent.

7th Standard

Mr. Corish

asked the Minister for Education if he will state: (a) the proportion of the vocational schools in which rural science is taught as a school subject; and (b) the proportion of the pupils attending these schools to whom it is taught.

Rural science is not included in the programmes for city vocational schools, and these schools are, therefore, excluded from the figures given in my reply; vocational schools in the towns are included, since they are usually attended by pupils from the surrounding country districts, and rural science is taught in some of these schools.

(a) Outside the County Boroughs of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford, and the Borough of Dun Laoghaire, there are 149 vocational schools in which whole-time day courses of instruction are conducted. Rural science is taught in 97 (or 65 per cent.) of these schools.

(b) The information asked for in the second part of the question is not yet available as it has been necessary to examine the class registers of all the schools in which rural science is taught in order to get exact information regarding the proportion of students who receive instruction in the subject. I am having this done, and I hope to have the information in a few days, when I will send it to the Deputy; or, if he prefers to repeat that part of the question next week, I will then be in a position to answer it.
