Vol. 105 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Broadcasting of Weather Forecasts.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware of the general dissatisfaction among farmers arising from the inadequate weather forecasting service provided by Radio Eireann, and particularly in regard to the unsuitable hours at which these reports are broadcast; and whether, in view of the importance of such forecasts to farmers, particularly in the present tillage crisis, he will arrange for the broadcasting of a more comprehensive weather forecast, with reference to the various areas in the country, from Radio Eireann, at 9 a.m. or earlier each day.

I am aware that more detailed weather reports are desirable for farming purposes, and the question of obtaining such reports has been under consideration for some time past. It is not, however, yet possible to say to what extent reports for particular areas can be made available.

I can assure the Deputy that the matter will be closely examined as to how far the service could be made of real practical advantage to agriculture.
