Vol. 105 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Westport Estate.

asked the Minister for Lands if he is aware that the Marquis of Sligo is in possession of a large estate at Westport; and if he will acquire this estate for redistribution among the small farmers of the neighbourhood.

The Land Commission have no proceedings in hands for the acquisition of the Marquis of Sligo's demesne or woodlands near Westport. Very considerable areas were acquired from this owner in former years.

The Minister must be aware that there are very considerable areas still left undivided there and that there is a very considerable congestion in the locality immediately adjoining. I think it would be no harm if the lands were inspected with a view to taking over even more from the gentleman in question.
