Written Answers. - Sea Fishing Statistics.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1944, 1945 and 1946, the number of men, distinguishing between regular and occasional workers, engaged in sea fishing.

The personnel engaged in sea fishing during the year 1946 was:

The corresponding particulars for 1944 and 1945 are contained in the Annual Report on the Sea and Inland Fisheries for each of these years.

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1944, 1945 and 1946, the total number of boats engaged in sea fishing; and further, the number of steam boats, motor boats and sail boats so engaged, distinguishing, in each case, between boats used exclusively for fishing and those used periodically for this purpose.

The information asked for in respect of the years 1944 and 1945 is given in the Annual Reports on the Sea and Inland Fisheries for these years. The figures for 1946 are as follows:—

asked the Minister for Agriculture if he will state, in respect of each of the years 1944, 1945 and 1946, the value of the catch derived from sea fishing; the value of the exports of such fish; and the amount paid to the men engaged in sea fishing.

I have no information as to the actual earnings of the fishermen. Most of them are remunerated on a "share" basis, and some may receive fixed wages. In fixing the shares regard is had to many varying factors as between one area and another.
