Vol. 105 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labour Committees.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state the number of labour committees, substituted under the Industrial Relations Act for former trade boards, which are currently operating; and the name of each such committee and the sphere of its operations.

There are 15 Joint Labour Committees such as the Deputy describes. The names of these committees are set out in the body of the reply, which will be circulated with the Official Report. The trade boards which previously existed for these 15 trades are each now deemed to be a Joint Labour Committee established under Part IV of the Industrial Relations Act, 1946. It is the function of the Joint Labour Committee to submit to the Labour Court proposals for fixing minimum rates of remuneration or for regulating conditions of employment of the workers in relation to whom the committee operates.

The committees referred to in the reply are as follows:—

Aerated Waters Trade, Boot and Shoe Repairing Trade, Brush and Broom Trade, Button-Making Trade, General Waste Materials Reclamation Trade, Handkerchief and Household Piece Goods Trade, Hand Embroidery Trade, Packing Trade, Paper Box Trade, Rope, Twine and Net Trade, Shirtmaking Trade, Sugar Confectionery and Food Preserving Trade, Tailoring Trade, Tobacco Trade, Women's Clothing and Millinery Trade.
