Risteárd Ua Maolchatha

asked the Minister for Education if he will state, in respect of each class in each of the following schools: (1) 1,795, Central Model (Infants); (2) 12,448, Gardiner Street Convent; (3) 15,056, North William Street Convent (Girls); (4) 15,816, North William Street Convent (Boys); (5) 16,000, Lower Rutland Street (Senior Girls); (6) 16,002, Lower Rutland Street (Infant Girls); (7) 16,001, Lower Rutland Street (Infant Boys); (8) 15,999, Lower Rutland Street (Senior Boys); and (9) 14,768, St. Patrick's (No. 2), Drumcondra—(a) (i) the total number on the roll; (ii) the total attendance on Thursday, 17th April, 1947; (b) the total number of teachers in each school; and (c) whether each school was considered to be adequately staffed with teachers, and if not, what additional teachers were then required, and what steps were being taken to have them appointed.

The information in reply to (a) (i) and (ii) and (b) of the Deputy's question is given in respect of each of the schools on the sheets attached.

As regards (c), each of the schools mentioned is adequately staffed in accordance with the existing sanctioned regulations. The question of whether these regulations should be modified in the case of large city schools is, however, a problem which continues to engage my attention, but as questions of accommodation, finance, etc., enter, I am not at present in a position to say what steps, if any, it may be necessary or possible to take.
