Vol. 107 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Movement of Population.

asked the Minister for External Affairs if he will state: (a) the number of Irish nationals who have left this country since the 1st January, 1946; (b) the number of non-nationals who came into this country, not including tourists, showing: (i) the number of German children, and (ii) the number of children of other nationality; and also the number of German children domiciled with private citizens in Eire.

I have no figures which would enable me to give the Deputy the information sought in the first part of the Question. The number of new travel permits and passports issued to Irish nationals in the period was 57,547, but I have no figures to show how many of these actually left the country, and, if so, for how long.

The number of non-nationals— excluding tourists and exempted aliens —who came into this country during the period, and who are registered under the Aliens Order, is 1,000. Of this number, 462 are children. Of these 462 children, 421 are of German nationality and 41 of other nationalities.

Of the 421 German children, 403 came here under the auspices of the Irish Red Cross Society. The other 18 came to private families. All the German children, except 13 who are still in the Red Cross Hostel at Glencree, have been accommodated in private families.
