Vol. 107 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Rents of Rooms and Flats.

asked the Minister for Justice when he proposes to introduce further legislation to fix rents, at a reasonable figure, for rooms and flats let furnished and unfurnished.

The law relating to rent control was examined, amended and consolidated by the Oireachtas less than two years ago. So far as the Department of Justice is concerned further legislation is not in view. On the particular matter of furnished lettings, I would refer the Deputy to a reply given by me to a parliamentary question asked on 11th March last.

Is the Minister aware since inflation overtook this country, that for rooms which were formerly let at 5/-, 25/- is now being looked for and that from £2 to £3 is being asked for two-roomed furnished flats? What are young married people to do with these high rents? Will the Minister try to help them by fixing a maximum rent?
