Vol. 107 No. 8

Committee on Finance. - Vote 42—General Register Office.

I move:

That a sum not exceeding £10,840 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1948, for the Salaries and Expenses of the Office of the Registrar General of Births, etc. (7 & 8 Vict., c. 81, sec. 54; 26 Vict., c. 11, sec. 9, and c. 27; 26 & 27 Vict., c. 52, sec. 11, and c. 90, sec. 20; 42 & 43 Vict., c. 70; and 43 & 44 Vict., c. 13).

Have complaints reached the Minister about the slowness in issuing birth certificates, as a result of which persons who intended to go on holidays and only had a short holiday time to spend, have been inconvenienced; and has there been a representation that this slowness was due to inadequate staff?

I got that complaint some time ago and we did put on some extra staff. I hope the position is now better. I have not got any report.

I am obliged to confess to the Minister that I did since hear that somebody got a certificate in 48 hours whereas before that it had taken much longer and that that is pretty general now.

I think it is very much improved now.

Vote put and agreed to.
