Vol. 107 No. 8

Committee on Finance. - Vote 43—Dundrum Asylum.

I move:—

That a sum not exceeding £14,780 be granted to complete the sum necessary to defray the Charge which will come in course of payment during the year ending the 31st day of March, 1948, for the Expenses of the Maintenance of Criminal Lunatics in the Dundrum Asylum (8 & 9 Vict., c. 107).

Can the Minister say if it is proposed to alter the system of recruitment for the labourers in Dundrum Asylum? I understand that it is proposed for the future to hold certain examinations or tests and that a number of the existing employees feel that they may not qualify in whatever subjects are set down although they are competent to discharge the work and have discharged it competently up to the present. Would the Minister consider allowing those already in employment there to remain under the new scheme and to dispense with the necessity in their case of undergoing a test?

Including the Minister for Agriculture's importees, I suppose.

Pardon?

Including the few warriors from Cavan brought in by the Minister for Agriculture.

I think Deputy Cosgrave is referring not to labourers but to warders.

Warders and labourers.

There is some suggestion with regard to warders. I could not answer the Deputy at the moment in detail. I can only promise to look into it.

Vote put and agreed to.
