Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cottages in County Mayo.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether the plans for proposed new cottages at Belmullet, Newport, Crossmolina, and other areas in North Mayo, have now been completed and forwarded to the Mayo County Council; if he is aware of the very serious shortage of houses in these areas; and if he will indicate when the cottages will be advertised for tender.

Subject to minor modifications in some cases, I have approved of lay-out plans and house designs submitted by the Mayo County Council in respect of two sites at Belmullet (total, 21 cottages); two sites at Killala (24 cottages) and two sites at Foxford (20 cottages). A lay-out plan in respect of a site at Swinford was submitted but was not approved on the grounds of the inadequacy of the access accommodation provided. No plans have yet been submitted in respect of Newport and Crossmolina. I am aware of the housing needs in these areas as disclosed by the surveys. The question of inviting tenders for the erection of cottages is a matter for the county council.
