Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Pensions.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the altered purchasing power of money, he will consider the advisability of introducing, in the near future, legislation to improve the condition of all pensioners of local authorities.

asked the Minister for Local Government whether, in view of the continued increase in the cost of living, and the hardships already experienced by persons in receipt of low rates of pension from the municipal services, he is now prepared to introduce proposals for legislation to grant increases to such persons.

With the permission of the Ceann Comhairle, I propose to take Nos. 28 and 29 together.

Provision has been included in Section 75 of the Superannuation Bill at present before the Dáil under which increases of pensions may be granted in certain cases in which service terminated after the 1st November last. I have under consideration pensions carrying cost-of-living bonus the upward variation of which was restricted by the Local Authorities (Cost of Living) Acts, 1940 and 1945. No review of pensions generally is in contemplation.
