Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Unemployment Insurance.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether any arrangement has been made, or is likely to be made in the near future, with the British Government concerning reciprocal arrangements under the Unemployment Insurance Acts, so far as they relate to civilian workers.

The discussions with the British authorities in the matter of reciprocal arrangements for unemployment insurance between Great Britain and this country, referred to in my reply to the Deputy's question of the 28th May last, have not yet taken place. The British National Insurance Act, 1946, which enables reciprocal arrangements to be made, will not, however, come into operation until the 5th July, 1948.

Will the Minister say when it is proposed to initiate these discussions so that the reciprocal arrangements may be made effective as soon as it is possible to do so under the 1946 British Insurance Act?

I have every hope that the discussions will commence within a month.
