Vol. 108 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Financial Discussions in London.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he will make a statement on the recent financial discussions in London, at which the Government were represented; and on the effect of the discussions on the availability of dollars and the convertibility of sterling for the purpose of financing purchases by this country from abroad.

I presume the Deputy's question relates to the Sterling Area Conference, on the conclusion of which a statement was issued to the effect that the representatives attending it would report to their respective Governments who would be able to consider what reductions in hard currency expenditure are possible and what assistance can be given in other ways to the strengthening of the sterling area's gold and dollar reserves.

I do not think it desirable to add to that statement at present.

Will the Minister say whether any report of these discussions has been considered by the Government here?

It is in process of being considered.
