I move:—

That the Ceann Comhairle direct the Clerk of the Dáil to issue his writ for the election of a member to fill the vacancy which has occurred in the membership of the present Dáil consequent on the death of Deputy Michael Morrissey, a member for the constituency of Waterford.

Agreed.

Would the Minister for Local Government tell us what the date of the elections will be?

The dates are determined by the Act and are fixed by the returning officer.

The election takes place from 21 to 28 days after the moving of the writs.

It is a matter for the returning officer, who must fix the date within certain limits.

Will petrol supplies be available for these constituencies, as in previous elections?

I do not know. I would require notice of that question. We will give some facilities, but the situation is difficult.

Would the Minister make an Order prohibiting the use of vehicles operated by means of the internal combustion engine and so provide that every man will have to foot it to the poll or stay away, and not have some individuals putting fleets of vehicles on the road at a cost of hundreds of nounds to themselves? Would that not be a good idea?

It might be, but it is out of order here and now.
