asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he will state in respect of each of the years 1938, 1939, 1945 and 1946: (a) the total number of firms in Ireland (other than in Northern Ireland) engaged in the manufacture of hats or caps suitable for wear by men or boys and made otherwise than wholly or mainly of felt; (b) the total value of the annual production; (c) the total amount paid in salaries or wages, and (d) the number of wage earners and of salaried persons employed.

I propose to take questions Nos. 75 and 76 together.

In each of the years 1938, 1939, 1945 and 1946, there were two firms engaged in the manufacture of hats and caps wholly or mainly of felt and suitable for wear by men or boys. The total number of firms engaged in the manufacture of hats and caps suitable for wear by men or boys and made otherwise than wholly or mainly of felt was eight in each of the years 1938 and 1939, ten in 1945 and eight in 1946.

Particulars of value of annual production, amount paid in salaries and wages and number of wage earners and of salaried persons employed in each of the groups of industries comprised in the questions cannot be furnished since publication would involve the disclosure of these particulars for individual firms.

The value of the production of all hats and caps suitable for wear by men or boys in each of the years 1938, 1939 and 1945, was as follows:—

Year

Value

£

1938

50,888

1939

50,592

1945

103,619

As the particulars relating to salaries and wages and persons employed furnished at the annual census of industrial production inquiries cover all apparel, and as some of the firms engaged in the manufacture of hats and caps also made overcoats, suits, etc., it is not possible to state, in respect of the manufacture of hats and caps, the total amount paid in salaries and wages and the number of wage earners and of salaried persons employed.

The total amounts paid in salaries and wages and the total numbers of wage earners and of salaried persons employed by firms engaged in the manufacture of hats and caps suitable for wear by men or boys, but which were also engaged in the manufacture of other apparel, were as follows:

Year

Salaries and wages

Wage earners and salaried persons employed at mid-October

27,375

1939

The particulars for 1946 are not yet available.
